Each of the modules is powerful enough to be compared to a standalone product in its category. SmartWare II offers a complete selection of powerful features to facilitate the building of complex custom applications and programs. The size of the database is determined by the amount of disk space because SmartWare II writes data to disk as RAM becomes limited. There is a report generator which allows combination of data from up to 100 files in one report and you can design custom data screens that display information from as many as 127 files on one screen. The Query-by-Example feature helps to quickly find specific data simply by selecting a sample of the type of data to extract.

dBase was the first widely used database management system (DBMS) for microcomputers, published by Ashton-Tate for CP/M, and later on the Apple II, Apple Macintosh, UNIX, VMS, and IBM PC under DOS where it became one of the best-selling software titles for a number of years. dBase was slow to transition successfully to Microsoft Windows and gradually lost market share to competitors such as Paradox, Clipper, FoxPro, and Microsoft Access. dBase was sold to Borland in 1991, which sold the rights to the product line in 1999 to the newly-formed dBase Inc. In 2004, dBase Inc. changed its name to dataBased Intelligence, Inc.

Starting in the mid 1980s many other companies produced their own dialects or variations on the product and language. These included FoxPro (now Visual FoxPro), Arago, Force, dbFast, dbXL, Quicksilver, Clipper, Xbase++, FlagShip, Recital's Terminal Developer, and Harbour/XHarbour. Together these are informally referred to as xBase. dBase's underlying file format, the .dbf file, is widely used in many other applications needing a simple format to store structured data.

dBase has evolved into a modern object oriented language that runs on 32 bit Windows. It can be used to build a wide variety of applications including web apps hosted on a Windows server, Windows rich client applications, and middleware applications. dBase can access most modern database engines via ODBC drivers.

dBase features an IDE with a Command Window and Navigator, a just in time compiler, a preprocessor, a virtual machine interpreter, a linker for creating dBase application .exe's, a freely available runtime engine, and numerous two-way GUI design tools including a Form Designer, Report Designer, Menu Designer, Label Designer, Datamodule Designer, SQL Query Designer, and Table Designer. Two-way Tools refers to the ability to switch back and forth between using a GUI design tool and the Source Code Editor. Other tools include a Source Code Editor, a Project Manager that simplifies building and deploying a dBase application, and an integrated Debugger. dBase features structured exception handling and has many built-in classes that can be subclassed via single inheritance. There are visual classes, data classes, and many other supporting classes. Visual classes include Form, SubForm, Notebook, Container, Entryfield, RadioButton, SpinBox, ComboBox, ListBox, PushButton, Image, Grid, ScrollBar, ActiveX, Report, ReportViewer, Text, TextLabel and many others. Database classes include Session, Database, Query, Rowset, Field, StoredProc and Datamodule classes. Other classes include File, String, Math, Array, Date, Exception, Object and others. dBase objects can be dynamically subclassed by adding new properties to them at runtime.

dBASE Plus is a rapid application development toolset that includes a modern object oriented programming language (dBL) that runs on 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows. It can be used to build a wide variety of applications including web applications, rich client applications, middleware applications, and server based applications. dBASE Plus has robust database access support and can access most modern database engines including Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, MySQL, Informix, DB2, InterBase, FireBird, Pervasive SQL, Microsoft Access and other databases that can be accessed via ODBC. In addition dBASE Plus supports access to its native .dbf tables (levels 3, 4, 5, and 7) as well as Paradox (.db) tables, FoxPro and Visual FoxPro tables.

GroupWise is a cross-platform collaborative software product from Novell, Inc. offering e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging and document management.

GroupWise can operate on a number of server and workstation platforms. Server platforms include NetWare, Linux, and Windows. There is a Windows client and a less-capable Java client for Linux and Mac OS X. Novell has promised closer client feature parity in the next major release, codenamed Bonsai, which is due for a Q4 2008 launch.There are also GroupWise connectors for Microsoft Outlook and Novell Evolution.

GroupWise WebAccess provides users with most of the functionality of the desktop clients from a Web browser. It also supports handheld/PDA access via the Web. The most current revision of GroupWise (7.0) includes license to GroupWise Mobile Server by Nokia which enables wireless mail support for almost any mobile device.

The GroupWise Post Office Agent (POA) supports IMAP and SOAP access to user mailboxes, in addition to the native client. The GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) provides SMTP communication to other E-Mail systems, and also supports IMAP, POP3, SOAP, and iCalendar access to user mailboxes. Additionally, special modules called gateways support direct connectivity to other groupware systems such as Microsoft Exchange Server and IBM Lotus Domino.

GroupWise includes instant messaging since version 6.5. The solution is targeted specifically at the corporate market with features such as directory service integration and SSL encryption. In addition to the Windows and Linux clients provided by Novell, the protocol is supported by popular multiprotocol IM applications such as Kopete, Pidgin (previously known as GAIM) and Adium.

The latest version is 7.0. It includes pre-bundled SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, which can be used for running GroupWise at no additional cost.

GroupWise is included in the Novell Open Workgroup Suite and its precursors, the Novell Small Business Suite and the Novell Linux Small Business Suite.

AOL has a long history on the internet, being one of the first companies to really get people online. Throughout its lifetime, it has been involved with a number of high profile acquisitions, perhaps the largest of which was the 1999 acquisition of the Netscape Communications Corporation. Netscape was known to many as the thought leader in web browsing, and had developed a number of complementary pieces of software that allowed for a rich suite of internet tools.

At the time of the acquisition, the Netscape team had begun working on converting their flagship product - the Netscape Communicator web suite - into open source software, under a new name: Mozilla. AOL played a significant role in the launch of the Netscape 6 browser, the first Mozilla-based, Netscape-branded browser that was released in 2000 and continued to solely fund the development and marketing efforts of Netscape-branded browsers. In 2003, an independent foundation was created to support the continued development of the open source web suite. AOL was a major source of support for the Mozilla Foundation and the company continued to develop versions of the Netscape browser based on the work of the foundation.

While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions.

AOL's focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL's current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it's the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.
